Thanks very much for that perspective, RJ.

I've run past the mosque in Langley Green, as well as Northgate Primary and Hazelwick School so many times.

It's hard to reconcile those peaceful places with the violence of the attacks on London in 2005.

From what you say, there is a longer history of local inter-racial disquiet in Crawley than is immediately apparent.

Gangs and fights are found in many towns. But it's the triggers that turn disaffection into terrorism which we need to understand.

Actually unemployment kept extremely low by national standards in the 90s, there was a healthy underclass in the 80s, there was brutal racism in every white pub I went into, as well as against other Asians from the young Muslim lads I grew up with in the mid to late 90s.

As a man in my mid 20s who grew up when Crawley went bad, I'd probably identify dependency (on benefits) and prosperity (easy to find but menial, boring Gatwick and industrial estate service jobs) working hand in hand to create a greedy and ugly culture.

If you put those things together I'm not surprised Crawley has started to produce some pretty shitty people.

In the 90s, white scum would fight the Muslim hardnuts who put 'Islam is the only way' stickers on Broadfield's lamposts - and at least that way the gangs would cancel each other out.

My mate went to now infamous boxing club/jihad camp in Tilgate Woods described by Jon Ronson - he had a rock solid right hand - maybe they were as good at teaching the idea of jihad.......
